Their relationship with the two classes below them, the upper-middle class and middle class such as Mr Birling and the working class such as Eva should not be one were they encourage the middle class to make life hard for the working class but help them.
Here are two diagrams showing the possibly different ways of showing the relationship between the different social classes.
For Mr Birling and perhaps a lot of the British elite in the early 20th century the two higher classes should keep their distance if not virtual complete separation from the working class.
This is different from the very real human compassion and sympathy both Eric and Gerald had for Eva, perhaps because they are younger and of a different mindset, a mindset which Priestley wanted to encourage. For Priestley and others, these vertical upwards classes should either just be relaxed or even perhaps in the future totally eliminated.
What unites us and prevails over how much money we may have is our common humanity. A humanity so tragically highlighted by the plight of Eva Smith and which should take priority over class differences.

We find out that he tried to look after her so that she would see him again 'I made her take some money to keep her going there' he uses his wealth to do some good.
He is also honest about his feelings 'I made her go to Morgan Terrace because I was sorry for her' he takes pity on Sheila and so we see a caring side to Gerald. All of these things help the audience see Gerald in a more positive light. Gerald Croft in An Inspector Calls. Gerald Croft is from an upper class family. At the start of the play he seems very comfortable - making himself at home and behaving like a member of the Birling family he even makes fun of Eric.
Mr Birling suggests that he is in line for a knighthood so long as the family have behaved themselves. Gerald confidently makes a joke at Eric's expense which is full of irony.
At first, when the truth comes out about his affair with Eva Smith he tries to avoid the subject. I knew her. This abrupt line of dialogue shows how initially Gerald is very evasive about his involvement with Eva Smith and wants to close down the topic as soon as possible. Eventually Gerald gains some respect from Sheila and the audience for being honest about his affair.
